This full-time position offers a great opportunity to contribute to the training and development of future procurement professionals and to support MKU’s teaching, research, and community service objectives. The successful candidate will be expected to promote academic excellence, foster innovation in pedagogy, and contribute to the wider institutional goals of the university.

Job Description

As a Tutorial Fellow in Procurement & Supplies Management, you will play a central role in the academic life of the university. You will be responsible for delivering high-quality teaching, participating in research and scholarly activities, supporting curriculum development, and mentoring undergraduate and diploma students. Your contribution will be instrumental in shaping a generation of professionals in the field of supply chain, logistics, and procurement management.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Curriculum Development and Review
    • Contribute to the periodic review and development of undergraduate and diploma-level curricula in procurement and supplies management.
    • Ensure that learning materials, course outlines, and content are aligned with industry needs, emerging trends, and national educational standards.
    • Integrate digital learning tools and innovative teaching methodologies to improve student learning outcomes.
  2. Teaching and Learning
    • Prepare comprehensive course outlines for all assigned units to ensure structured delivery and full syllabus coverage.
    • Deliver engaging lectures and tutorials to undergraduate, diploma, and certificate students using both face-to-face and blended learning approaches.
    • Assess student learning through continuous assessment tests (CATs), assignments, practical projects, and final examinations.
    • Maintain up-to-date teaching schedules and provide regular academic support to students.
  3. Supervision and Mentorship
    • Guide and supervise undergraduate student projects, term papers, and research reports.
    • Offer mentorship and academic advising to students pursuing careers in procurement, logistics, and supply chain fields.
    • Participate in project proposal defenses, review panels, and related academic activities.
  4. Research and Publications
    • Undertake academic research in procurement, logistics, supply chain management, or related areas that contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the discipline.
    • Publish scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals and present research findings at academic and professional conferences.
    • Participate in collaborative research activities and interdisciplinary projects within the university and with external institutions.
  5. Resource Mobilization and Fundraising
    • Develop proposals for research funding and contribute to the university’s initiatives to attract external grants and partnerships.
    • Engage with industry players, government agencies, and professional bodies for collaboration and resource mobilization.
  6. Industrial Linkages and Field Engagement
    • Facilitate student participation in industrial attachments, field studies, and educational trips.
    • Evaluate and assess student performance during internships and practical placements.
    • Establish and maintain partnerships with organizations and companies in the supply chain sector for experiential learning opportunities.
  7. Examination and Academic Integrity
    • Prepare, administer, invigilate, and mark examinations to assess students’ comprehension of course content.
    • Submit academic reports and grades within stipulated timelines.
    • Monitor class attendance, ensuring students meet the required threshold of 80% attendance before they qualify to sit for examinations.
  8. University Functions and Administration
    • Actively participate in departmental and university-wide meetings, workshops, and official functions.
    • Carry out administrative roles assigned by the departmental head or school director.
    • Contribute to community service and extension work as part of the university’s outreach programs.
  9. Quality Assurance and Professional Development
    • Adhere to university policies on academic quality, ethics, and professional conduct.
    • Engage in continuous professional development and training programs to remain current in the field.
    • Maintain professional membership and participate in activities organized by relevant regulatory bodies.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

Candidates must meet the following academic and professional criteria:

  • A Master’s degree in Procurement, Logistics, Purchasing, or Supply Chain Management from a recognized university.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in the same or closely related field.
  • Must have registered for a PhD in Procurement, Logistics, or Supply Chain Management.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ teaching experience at the university level with proven hands-on expertise in procurement software and database systems.
  • Must be registered with a relevant professional body, such as KISM (Kenya Institute of Supplies Management) or equivalent, where applicable.
