Job Summary

The Senior Heavy Plant Mechanic will be responsible for responding to and resolving mechanical issues affecting a variety of heavy-duty machinery used in aquaculture production and farm operations. These include trucks, cranes, bulldozers, backhoes, mixers, rammers, and other construction-related equipment.

The ideal candidate will be a hands-on technician with a minimum of five years’ experience and will possess strong diagnostic, repair, and servicing capabilities. This role will require adaptability, attention to detail, and the ability to work outdoors in physically demanding environments. The candidate must also possess strong communication skills to document and report on mechanical operations effectively.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Mechanical Emergency Response
    • Respond rapidly to mechanical emergencies across farm sites and operational areas.
    • Troubleshoot urgent issues affecting equipment performance and safety.
    • Apply both standard procedures and innovative solutions to restore functionality.
  2. Routine and Preventive Inspections
    • Inspect a variety of heavy-duty equipment including trucks, bulldozers, cranes, concrete mixers, and vibratory machines.
    • Conduct regular performance and safety checks to detect early signs of mechanical issues.
    • Ensure compliance with operational and environmental safety standards during inspections.
  3. Fault Diagnosis and Troubleshooting
    • Use specialized diagnostic tools to pinpoint faults in engine, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
    • Interpret diagnostic results to guide repair or replacement decisions.
    • Collaborate with team members when complex systems require group evaluation.
  4. Repair and Component Replacement
    • Dismantle machinery components to replace or repair defective parts.
    • Adjust equipment components such as engines, transmissions, and hydraulic units to factory specifications.
    • Reassemble machines with precision, ensuring all adjustments meet manufacturer guidelines.
  5. Major and Minor Maintenance Tasks
    • Perform both scheduled and unscheduled repair work depending on equipment condition and operational urgency.
    • Conduct standard servicing routines such as oil changes, lubrication, belt tensioning, and fluid replacement.
    • Provide cleaning and maintenance services for machine attachments such as blades, side booms, and winches.
  6. Reporting and Documentation
    • Maintain detailed records of maintenance and repair activities.
    • Document replaced parts, time taken, and observations during inspections or repairs.
    • Report any observed or recurring faults to the maintenance supervisor or management for follow-up.
  7. Safety and Operational Readiness
    • Adhere strictly to safety protocols while operating and servicing heavy machinery.
    • Ensure all repaired or serviced machinery is tested and verified for operational readiness before being returned to use.
    • Participate in toolbox talks and safety briefings to foster a culture of proactive risk management.
  8. Collaboration and Support
    • Coordinate with farm operations teams to schedule repairs during off-peak hours to minimize operational disruption.
    • Support junior technicians and apprentices by providing guidance and informal mentoring during repairs and diagnostics.
    • Communicate clearly with supervisors regarding status updates, risks, and resource requirements.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • A diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related discipline from a recognized institution.
  • Government Trade Test (GTT) certification is highly advantageous.
  • Certification in Diesel or Heavy Equipment Mechanics from a reputable technical institution.
  • At least 5 years of verifiable experience working with heavy construction or farm equipment.
  • Solid understanding of diesel engine systems, hydraulic controls, and mechanical components.
  • Familiarity with equipment such as dozers, cranes, concrete mixers, compactors, generators, vibrators, and rammers.
  • Skilled in using modern diagnostic tools and testing software to identify and resolve faults.
  • Physically fit and capable of handling heavy mechanical components and tools under varied outdoor conditions.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for reporting and collaborative work.
