Job Purpose
The Farm Foreman will be responsible for managing the daily operations of a medium-sized demonstration farm. The role involves coordinating livestock and crop production activities, maintaining high standards of hygiene and quality assurance, overseeing sales from the demo farm, and implementing sustainable agricultural practices. The successful candidate will also support innovation and efficiency improvements that align with HiH EA’s goal of increasing productivity and enhancing livelihoods.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
1. Livestock Management
- Supervise and participate in the daily milking of dairy cows using manual and machine-based methods.
- Ensure consistent and timely feeding and watering of all livestock, including cattle, goats, and poultry.
- Monitor animal health, identify symptoms of disease or distress, and coordinate veterinary care as needed.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene in all animal housing and related facilities.
- Oversee breeding programs, manage calf rearing processes, and keep accurate records of animal births, vaccinations, and medical treatments.
- Monitor feed inventory and quality to prevent contamination and wastage.
- Coordinate and monitor honey harvesting activities for bee colonies maintained on the farm.
- Facilitate the marketing and sale of livestock and animal products, including milk, eggs, honey, and fish.
- Implement eco-friendly waste management practices for manure and general farm waste.
- Prepare and manage the livestock production budget and ensure cost control measures are adhered to.
2. Crop Production
- Supervise all crop production activities including land preparation, planting, weeding, spraying, and harvesting.
- Maintain irrigation infrastructure and ensure efficient and timely watering schedules.
- Monitor crop health and provide the necessary inputs such as manure, fertilizers, and pesticides.
- Maintain a detailed seasonal crop calendar and advise on optimal planting schedules.
- Prepare budgets for crop production, covering costs such as seeds, tools, and labor.
- Ensure proper storage, drying, and transportation of harvested produce to reduce post-harvest losses.
- Identify and negotiate with buyers to secure favorable markets for farm produce.
3. Strategic Planning and Productivity Enhancement
- Collaborate with the Project Officer to assess and implement strategies to improve farm yields across both livestock and crop segments.
- Leverage local and regional market opportunities to increase revenue from farm activities.
- Recommend the adoption of new technologies or practices to enhance productivity and reduce costs.
- Keep abreast of market trends, best practices, and industry developments to inform farm planning and development.
4. Farm Personnel Supervision and Training
- Assign daily duties to farmhands and monitor execution to ensure optimal productivity.
- Train junior farm workers and new employees on livestock care, field operations, and safety protocols.
- Lead by example in enforcing proper work techniques and professional conduct on the farm.
- Ensure safety protocols are followed and farm staff are equipped with the necessary protective gear and training.
- Provide mentorship and support to workers to build skills, confidence, and teamwork.
5. Machinery and Infrastructure Oversight
- Operate and supervise the use of farm equipment such as tractors, water pumps, sprayers, and other mechanical tools.
- Conduct regular maintenance and minor repairs of farm machinery and tools.
- Maintain fencing, storage facilities, animal sheds, and irrigation systems in good working order.
- Monitor structural integrity and enforce maintenance schedules to avoid equipment failure and downtime.
6. Monitoring, Record Keeping, and Reporting
- Keep accurate records of livestock performance indicators such as milk yield, weight gain, and feed conversion.
- Maintain logs of crop yields, farm input usage, labor hours, and sales transactions.
- Prepare weekly progress reports summarizing activities, sales, challenges, and recommendations.
- Ensure all sales from livestock and crop products are properly recorded in the system.
- Track production costs and provide feedback for efficiency improvements and cost reductions.
7. Administrative and Financial Responsibilities
- Participate in budgeting processes for both crop and livestock production segments.
- Work with finance and administrative teams to control costs and align operations with allocated budgets.
- Coordinate the preparation and production of annual reports detailing farm achievements and challenges.
- Maintain transparency and accountability in all farm operations, ensuring alignment with HiH EA’s values and policies.
Person Specifications
- A Diploma in Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Crop Production, or Farm Management is required.
- A minimum of 3 to 5 years of practical experience managing mixed farming operations is essential.
- Strong knowledge of livestock handling, dairy management, and basic veterinary care.
- Familiarity with crop cultivation, irrigation systems, pest control, and harvesting practices.
- Proficient in using and maintaining farm machinery and tools.
- Good mechanical aptitude to troubleshoot and perform minor repairs on equipment.
- Solid understanding of business development principles relevant to smallholder farming.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to train, supervise, and motivate staff.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with team members and external partners.
- Competence in maintaining records, preparing budgets, and generating accurate reports.
