Key Responsibilities
The Corporate Tax Operations Manager – Africa will play a central role in the management and oversight of Maersk’s corporate tax operations throughout the African continent. The successful candidate will report directly to the Regional Tax Manager and support multiple stakeholders across Maersk’s business units. Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
1. Tax Compliance and Documentation
- Preparation, review, and documentation of all tax compliance matters applicable to A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S business units across Africa.
- Ensuring timely and accurate filing of corporate tax returns in various African jurisdictions.
- Review of advance tax calculations, quarterly tax deduction at source (TDS) compliance, and other routine filings prepared by third-party consultants.
- Maintenance of records and documentation to meet tax authority and internal audit requirements.
2. Representation and Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as a liaison with multiple internal and external stakeholders, including business units, senior management, external consultants, and tax authorities.
- Represent Maersk before tax authorities and tax tribunals in the region concerning direct tax matters and related hearings.
- Handle appeals, respond to tax notices and show cause letters, and submit refund or rectification applications as required.
3. Transfer Pricing and International Transactions
- Oversee the review and preparation of transfer pricing documentation for international transactions conducted by African business units.
- Ensure proper compliance with local transfer pricing regulations and alignment with Maersk’s global transfer pricing policies.
- Coordinate with group tax teams to implement appropriate transfer pricing strategies and documentation frameworks.
4. Tax Advisory Services
- Provide ongoing tax advisory support to business units on new business models, commercial arrangements, or country-specific tax queries.
- Interpret local tax laws and provide practical solutions tailored to each country’s regulatory environment and Maersk’s operational strategy.
- Collaborate with legal, finance, and compliance teams to address cross-functional tax matters.
5. Risk Management and Audit Support
- Assist with tax audit management by preparing documentation, responding to audit queries, and coordinating with audit teams.
- Provide inputs for internal risk assessments related to tax exposure and suggest strategies for risk mitigation.
- Monitor changes in tax laws and regulations and evaluate their potential impact on the business.
6. Process Improvements and Technology Integration
- Support the implementation of standardized and tax-compliant processes that align with group policies and industry best practices.
- Work with finance and technology teams to leverage automation tools and ERP systems (SAP) to streamline tax processes and improve data accuracy.
- Recommend improvements in tax-related processes, controls, and systems to improve operational efficiency.
7. Reporting and Strategic Input
- Prepare and circulate detailed reports including tax assessment status trackers, refund application updates, and tax memos for internal use.
- Collaborate with the Regional Tax Manager to provide data-led insights and recommendations to improve tax planning and decision-making.
- Support special projects including Mutual Agreement Procedures (MAPs), Advance Pricing Agreements (APAs), and other strategic initiatives.
8. Leadership and Team Support
- Assist in managing the broader tax function, including developing tax strategies, standard operating procedures, and future-focused planning.
- Foster a proactive and collaborative working relationship with other functional heads, regional teams, and the global tax organization.
- Support junior team members and contribute to talent development within the tax function.
Who We Are Looking For
Maersk is seeking a well-rounded and highly experienced tax professional who possesses the knowledge, leadership skills, and regional expertise to manage the multifaceted tax landscape across Africa. The ideal candidate will have the following profile:
- A qualified Chartered Accountant with a specialization or substantial experience in corporate taxation, international taxation, and transfer pricing (preferred).
- A minimum of 10 years of proven experience in corporate finance and tax operations.
- Practical experience handling tax compliance, audit, litigation, and advisory matters across multiple jurisdictions.
- Familiarity with enterprise resource planning systems such as SAP and proficiency in MS Office applications.
- Strong understanding of the intersection between business operations and taxation, with the ability to analyze commercial transactions and identify tax implications.
- Capable of formulating and implementing tax-efficient business strategies that are compliant with local laws and international tax frameworks.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments and work under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience in managing external advisors, auditors, and engaging with government authorities on tax matters.
- Ability and willingness to learn about tax systems in different African countries and contribute to region-wide initiatives.
- Proficiency in French is considered an added advantage.
