Role Purpose

The role of Accountant, Financial Reporting is central to the preparation, accuracy, and timely delivery of financial reports and statutory returns. The successful candidate will ensure compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) regulations, and internal financial policies. This position plays a crucial part in maintaining the integrity of financial data, facilitating both internal and external audits, and upholding robust financial controls. Additionally, the Accountant will support data-driven business decisions through high-quality reporting and analysis.

Key Responsibilities

The position of Accountant, Financial Reporting encompasses the following key areas:

1. Financial Reporting & Compliance

  • Preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in line with IFRS and internal policies.
  • Timely and accurate submission of financial reports to the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) and other relevant government or industry bodies.
  • Active involvement in implementing and ensuring compliance with IFRS 17 and any other relevant financial reporting standards related to insurance.
  • Continuous monitoring of regulatory requirements and ensuring company financial practices remain compliant with updated reporting rules and standards.

2. General Ledger and Period-End Close

  • Maintenance of the company’s general ledger, ensuring completeness and accuracy of financial entries.
  • Execution of month-end and year-end financial closing processes with appropriate documentation.
  • Preparation and posting of essential monthly journal entries, including but not limited to accruals, amortization, depreciation, and provisions.

3. Audit Support

  • Preparation of audit schedules and supporting documentation for external and internal audits.
  • Liaison with other departments to ensure timely provision of required audit materials and responses.
  • Addressing and resolving audit findings by working closely with auditors and internal stakeholders to implement recommendations.

4. Budgeting & Forecasting Support

  • Assisting in the development of annual budgets and rolling forecasts across various departments.
  • Conducting variance analysis between actual and budgeted figures and providing insightful commentary to management.
  • Supporting strategic planning through financial modeling and analysis.

5. Tax & Statutory Returns

  • Supporting the finance team in preparing and submitting all statutory tax filings, including VAT, PAYE, withholding tax (WHT), and income tax.
  • Ensuring accuracy and compliance with all applicable tax laws and working collaboratively with the payment team to meet deadlines.
  • Keeping records and documentation related to all tax filings for audit and compliance purposes.

6. Financial Controls & Process Improvement

  • Assisting in the implementation and continuous monitoring of internal controls to safeguard the integrity of financial data and reporting processes.
  • Identifying and driving opportunities for automation and process improvement within the financial reporting framework.
  • Maintaining up-to-date documentation of all relevant accounting procedures, controls, and policy manuals.

Academic and Professional Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • CPA (K) or ACCA certification is mandatory

Experience Required

  • Minimum of four (4) years of relevant professional experience in financial reporting or external/internal audit
  • Prior experience in the insurance or broader financial services sector will be a distinct advantage
  • Strong working knowledge of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), including IFRS 17, and regulatory frameworks from IRA and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)
