Position Overview
The Nurse – Endoscopy will be responsible for providing direct and specialized nursing care to patients undergoing gastrointestinal and other endoscopic procedures. This involves a combination of pre-procedural patient assessment, intra-procedural support to physicians and patients, post-procedural care, and coordination with other healthcare providers. The nurse will also participate in clinical audits, patient safety monitoring, and continuing education initiatives to ensure best practices are upheld within the Endoscopy Unit.
Key Responsibilities
1. Patient Preparation and Pre-Procedure Assessment
The nurse will be required to perform a comprehensive head-to-toe patient assessment prior to the procedure. This involves:
- Evaluating vital signs, allergies, current medication use, and overall health status
- Using standardized checklists to confirm procedural readiness
- Ensuring that patient consent has been obtained and documented
- Establishing IV access and confirming the availability of required medications
- Addressing patient concerns and educating them about the procedure, expected outcomes, and aftercare
2. Procedure Readiness and Equipment Management
To maintain the highest standards of safety and efficiency:
- The nurse will confirm that all necessary equipment is clean, functional, and ready for use before the procedure starts
- Adhere strictly to infection control and aseptic techniques
- Communicate with the physician and team to coordinate roles during the procedure
- Prepare suction, oxygen, monitoring devices, and emergency equipment
- Report and escalate any equipment malfunctions to the supervisor promptly
3. Intra-Procedure Support and Monitoring
During procedures, the nurse will function either as a scrub nurse or a circulating nurse. Responsibilities include:
- Handing instruments to the physician in a sterile field
- Assisting in biopsies, polypectomies, or advanced endoscopic interventions
- Administering prescribed IV medications and fluids
- Monitoring patient vitals, sedation levels, and overall condition continuously
- Ensuring the patient’s dignity, comfort, and privacy are maintained throughout the procedure
4. Post-Procedure Care and Recovery
Following the procedure, the nurse will:
- Monitor the patient during recovery until they are stable
- Assess readiness for discharge and provide care accordingly
- Offer clear post-procedure instructions, both verbal and written, to patients and caregivers
- Transfer patients to hospital wards or discharge them as per protocol
- Report any complications to the attending physician immediately
5. Documentation and Communication
Timely and accurate documentation is critical. The nurse will:
- Maintain detailed records of procedures performed, medications administered, and patient responses
- Ensure that all nursing actions, observations, and assessments are recorded in patient files
- Complete billing documentation for drugs, consumables, and CSSD items used during the procedure
- Handover effectively to other care teams or family members, ensuring no critical information is omitted
6. Infection Prevention and Patient Safety
To provide a safe and therapeutic environment, the nurse must:
- Practice and promote strict infection control measures, including hand hygiene and use of PPE
- Conduct routine safety checks on suction machines, oxygen tanks, and other equipment
- Report incidents, near-misses, and potential hazards in a timely manner
- Ensure safe disposal of medical waste in line with institutional and regulatory policies
7. Equipment and Consumables Management
The Nurse – Endoscopy is accountable for:
- Daily inventory checks and verification of all endoscopy instruments and devices
- Safe handling, cleaning, storage, and maintenance of scopes and accessories
- Flagging faulty equipment for maintenance or replacement
- Practicing prudent stock control to avoid wastage or shortages
- Recording all consumables and medications used for accurate billing
8. Continuing Education and Quality Improvement Initiatives

- Participate actively in unit-based education sessions, workshops, and updates
- Engage in Quality Improvement (QI) projects related to endoscopy services
- Contribute to Clinical Care Program Certification (CCPC) initiatives
- Take part in internal audits, skills checks, and peer assessments
- Stay up to date with the latest guidelines, technologies, and evidence-based practices in endoscopy nursing
Minimum Requirements
- Registered Nurse (RN) qualification from a recognized institution
- Current licensure with the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK)
- Certificate in Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Demonstrated evidence-based knowledge and understanding of current best practices in Medical-Surgical nursing

- Prior experience in an endoscopy or surgical unit will be an added advantage
- Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills
