Introduction

In line with this commitment, the County seeks to recruit a competent and driven Agriculture Officer who will provide technical guidance, coordinate farmer outreach programs, and contribute to the successful implementation of agricultural initiatives at the sub-county level. The ideal candidate will combine practical experience with strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and a passion for community engagement.
Job Purpose
The Agriculture Officer will play a central role in implementing the County’s agricultural strategic plans and policy frameworks. The officer will be responsible for facilitating farmer support services, coordinating sub-county agricultural activities, and ensuring effective monitoring, evaluation, and reporting on agricultural development projects.
This position requires a results-oriented individual who can work with multiple stakeholders, including farmers, local community organizations, research institutions, and government agencies, to deliver impactful agricultural programs.
Detailed Duties and Responsibilities
The Agriculture Officer will be expected to perform the following key duties:
- Implementation of Agricultural Strategic Plans and Policies
- Operationalize the County’s agricultural policy framework at the sub-county level.
- Contribute to the design and execution of strategic interventions aimed at increasing productivity, promoting agribusiness, and enhancing food and nutrition security.
- Provision of Technical Support to Farmers
- Deliver hands-on technical support and advisory services to farmers in crop production, soil fertility, irrigation methods, pest and disease management, and post-harvest handling.
- Facilitate access to new technologies and sustainable farming practices.
- Coordination of Farmer Capacity Building
- Organize and coordinate farmer training sessions, field days, and demonstrations aimed at building local capacity in modern agricultural techniques.
- Collaborate with agricultural extension officers to identify training needs and deliver tailored interventions.
- Sub-County Agricultural Coordination
- Oversee the coordination of various agricultural programs and initiatives, including:
- Crop development and food security
- Agri-nutrition and climate-smart agriculture
- Agricultural engineering services
- Research, extension, and training activities
- Agribusiness development
- Monitoring and evaluation of ongoing projects
- Oversee the coordination of various agricultural programs and initiatives, including:
- Implementation of Agricultural Projects
- Execute agricultural projects funded through the County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP), donor grants, or public-private partnerships.
- Ensure adherence to project timelines, budgets, and reporting standards.
- Project Budgeting and Public Participation
- Actively participate in budget formulation and public engagement sessions to ensure agricultural priorities are aligned with community needs.
- Champion inclusivity and transparency during the planning and execution of agricultural programs.
- Financial Management
- Exercise prudent financial management and ensure proper utilization of funds allocated to agricultural activities and projects.
- Maintain accurate financial records and ensure timely submission of reports.
- Extension Services Execution
- Carry out agricultural extension duties effectively and in a timely manner to support farmers and stakeholders.
- Promote knowledge sharing and technology transfer through participatory methods.
- Field Data Collection and Reporting
- Compile detailed and accurate field reports on farmer outreach, production trends, pest/disease outbreaks, and input utilization.
- Analyze field data critically to guide decision-making and planning.
- Participate in Surveys and Assessments
- Engage in field assessments, agricultural surveys, and baseline studies to inform policy and project implementation.
- Critical Analysis of Reports for Decision Making
- Review and interpret field data and reports to identify gaps, opportunities, and areas requiring technical interventions.
- Recommend evidence-based solutions and strategies to improve agricultural outcomes.
- Stakeholder Communication
- Disseminate technical reports and project outcomes to other staff members, departments, and stakeholders in a timely and clear manner.
- Foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among extension staff, farmers, and institutional partners.
- Support to County/Sub-County Agricultural Initiatives
- Undertake any additional tasks as may be assigned by the supervisor to support county-wide agricultural priorities and emerging challenges.
Requirements for Appointment
To qualify for appointment to this position, a candidate must meet the following criteria:
- Be a Kenyan citizen.
- Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following disciplines from a recognized institution:
- Agriculture
- Horticulture
- Agricultural Economics
- Agronomy
- Agribusiness
- Agricultural Education and Extension
- Agricultural Engineering
- Have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in a similar role or related agricultural fieldwork.
- Be proficient in computer applications relevant to agricultural planning, data analysis, and report writing.
- Possess strong proposal development skills and be able to contribute to resource mobilization initiatives.
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to convey technical information to non-expert audiences.
- Exhibit strong report writing capabilities, including the preparation of technical documents, monitoring and evaluation reports, and policy briefs.
- Be skilled in resource mobilization, both for small-scale and large-scale agricultural programs.
