Overall Responsibility
The Locum Radiographer will report to the Radiology Manager and will be responsible for providing high-quality diagnostic radiographic services in line with the hospital’s standards and policies. The individual will play a pivotal role in diagnostic imaging, patient safety, equipment handling, and quality assurance.
This position requires a detail-oriented individual who upholds patient care, confidentiality, and diagnostic accuracy, working both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical setting.
Key Responsibilities
The Radiographer (Locum) will be expected to carry out the following key duties and responsibilities:
1. Patient Imaging and Evaluation
- Receive patients and verify their identity and diagnostic requirements based on physician orders.
- Perform initial patient assessment prior to imaging, including screening for contraindications to imaging procedures.
- Execute high-quality diagnostic radiographic procedures using modern imaging equipment and ensure the comfort and safety of the patient throughout the process.
- Explain procedures to patients in a clear and reassuring manner, addressing any questions or concerns.
2. Image Processing and Archiving
- Process diagnostic images in a timely and accurate manner, ensuring optimal imaging parameters and quality.
- Archive images using the hospital’s Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) to ensure secure digital storage.
- Retrieve and dispatch validated radiology reports to relevant departments in accordance with internal procedures.
3. Radiation Protection and Safety Compliance
- Apply radiation safety standards and protocols as prescribed by the Kenya Nuclear Radiological Authority.
- Use appropriate protective equipment and shielding techniques to minimize radiation exposure to patients, self, and other staff.
- Regularly inspect and monitor imaging areas to ensure they remain in compliance with safety guidelines and operational policies.
4. Equipment Handling and Maintenance
- Operate a range of radiographic imaging equipment, ensuring each is calibrated and functioning optimally.
- Monitor equipment performance and report any malfunctions or required repairs to the Radiology Manager or Biomedical Engineering Department.
- Ensure adherence to scheduled preventive maintenance and calibration procedures to support diagnostic accuracy and patient safety.
5. Record Management and Documentation
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of all radiographic procedures, patient interactions, and equipment logs.
- Ensure that patient information and imaging records are properly documented, stored, and accessible to authorized personnel only.
- Support auditing and quality control initiatives by maintaining standardized documentation and contributing to departmental assessments.
6. Interdepartmental Collaboration
- Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals to ensure accurate and timely diagnostic support.
- Participate in departmental meetings and case reviews, providing professional input from the radiography perspective.
- Uphold interdisciplinary collaboration and a team-based approach to patient management.
7. Professional Development and Ethics
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of radiography best practices, safety protocols, and equipment innovations through continuous professional development.
- Demonstrate integrity, professionalism, and respect for patient confidentiality at all times.
- Contribute to training and mentoring of interns or junior radiography staff when needed.
Required Qualifications and Skills
Applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered for the Locum Radiographer position:
- Academic Qualification:
Diploma in Medical Imaging Sciences or a Bachelor’s Degree in Radiography from a recognized institution. - Professional Certification:
Must be registered and licensed by the Kenya Nuclear Radiological Authority (KNRA). - Professional Membership:
Membership in a recognized professional body such as the Society of Radiography in Kenya (SORK) is highly desirable. - Experience:
Minimum of two (2) years of post-qualification work experience in a busy hospital setting. - Technical Skills and Attributes:
- Proficiency in operating digital radiography systems, PACS, and other hospital IT systems.
- Strong attention to detail and an ability to deliver precise diagnostic imaging results.
- Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to upholding high standards of patient care and safety.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a dynamic clinical environment.
