Position 2: Early Years Homeroom Teacher

Location: Aga Khan Academy, Nairobi – Nursery Section

Role Summary

The Early Years Homeroom Teacher – Nursery will be tasked with creating and maintaining a nurturing, stimulating, and inclusive learning environment for young learners in alignment with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Early Years framework. The teacher will be the main point of contact for the class, delivering holistic care and education, while fostering curiosity, creativity, and independence among students.

This position involves a combination of instructional planning, direct teaching, parental communication, and collaboration with colleagues. The teacher will play a central role in ensuring each child’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth, laying the foundation for lifelong learning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Planning and delivering age-appropriate, inquiry-based learning experiences in line with the IB Early Years framework.
  • Creating a safe, nurturing, and inclusive classroom environment where young learners feel respected, valued, and supported.
  • Supporting children’s holistic development, including their emotional, social, cognitive, and physical needs.
  • Encouraging children’s natural curiosity and creativity through a balanced mix of structured activities and free exploration.
  • Serving as the primary contact for the class, maintaining consistent and open communication with parents or guardians about student progress and well-being.
  • Collaborating with colleagues and the wider teaching team to ensure consistency and quality across the Early Years program.
  • Designing learning activities that integrate play, exploration, and discovery, in keeping with IB standards.
  • Observing, documenting, and assessing children’s progress, and using this information to adapt teaching approaches to individual learning needs.
  • Promoting respect, empathy, and inclusivity within the classroom community.
  • Incorporating technology and innovative teaching methods where appropriate to enhance the learning experience.
  • Attending staff meetings, training, and professional development activities to strengthen teaching practice and remain updated on IB pedagogical approaches.
  • Supporting the transition of children from the nursery to higher levels of the Primary Years Programme (PYP).

This role requires a passionate educator committed to guiding young children through their earliest years of education.
