The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) invites applications for the Pauline Bakibinga Memorial Scholarship, an initiative established in September 2022 to honor the late Dr. Pauline Bakibinga. Pauline was a distinguished researcher, mentor, and advocate for digital health in Africa. Throughout her career, she dedicated herself to improving health outcomes for women and children while inspiring and mentoring young women pursuing careers in health and research.
This scholarship reflects her passion and vision by supporting promising female students in East Africa who are pursuing master’s degrees with a focus on digital health. Between 2024 and 2028, this scholarship will continue to invest in the next generation of female leaders in digital health research, creating long-lasting impact across communities.

Scholarship Details
Amount and Period of Award
- Each year, between USD 5,000 and 10,000 will be awarded.
- The funding is meant to support research project costs (not tuition) for a master’s degree program focusing on digital health.
- The maximum annual award is USD 10,000.
- The scholarship program runs from 2024 to 2028.
This support is designed to empower students to produce high-quality research that contributes to improving healthcare delivery through digital innovations.
Eligibility and Expectations
To be considered for the Pauline Bakibinga Memorial Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Hold an undergraduate degree.
- Have admission into a master’s degree program that focuses on public health.
- Have an approved research topic that integrates digital health innovations.
- Provide Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval or proof of submission (this is an added advantage).
Additional considerations:
- Applicants from Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) and those affiliated with the Busoga Health Forum are strongly encouraged to apply.
- The scholarship is a non-repayable award and does not bind recipients to APHRC or their employers. However, recipients are expected to uphold the legacy of Pauline Bakibinga by demonstrating professional integrity, contributing to the advancement of digital health, and supporting future students whenever possible.
Application Process
The application process consists of two key steps:
Step One: Online Survey
Applicants must complete a short online survey before submitting their documents.
Step Two: Submission of Application Documents
After completing the survey, applicants must compile their documents into one PDF file and submit it via email to [email protected] with the subject line: Pauline Bakibinga Memorial Scholarship.
The PDF file must include:
- A motivational essay (maximum 500 words) explaining your passion for digital health and reasons for applying.
- Two letters of recommendation (each one page maximum), with at least one from an academic supervisor.
- Copies of academic certificates.
- Proof of admission into a relevant master’s degree program.
Important: Applications must be complete and submitted by September 29, 2025. Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered.
Review of Applications and Notice of Award
- Applications will be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee.
- Selection will be based on:
- Commitment to advancing digital health.
- Academic performance.
- Relevant prior experience in digital health-related projects.
- Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview.
- Finalists will be notified of the outcome via email within one month after the deadline.
About Dr. Pauline Bakibinga
Dr. Pauline Bakibinga was a dedicated researcher who joined APHRC in 2013 as a post-doctoral fellow after completing her PhD at the University of Bergen. She rose to the role of Associate Research Scientist and, by May 2022, was appointed as head of the Health Systems Strengthening Research Unit.
Her career was marked by significant contributions, including:
- Developing digital tools that enabled community health workers to identify critically ill newborns and mothers, facilitating timely referrals.
- Leading the development of policy frameworks for telehealth in several African countries.
- Publishing over 40 academic papers and raising approximately USD 7 million in research funding.
In recognition of her excellence, Pauline received the Tumani Corrah Award for Research Excellence in Africa just days before her passing in 2022.
She was also a beloved mentor, guiding young researchers across Africa, particularly at her alma mater, Mbarara University of Science and Technology. Her networks and collaborations were vast, and her influence extended globally.
Beyond her professional life, Pauline was deeply engaged in her faith, community, and family. She was known for her generosity, vibrant personality, dedication to mentorship, and unwavering passion for uplifting others.
