Job Purpose
The role of a Driver at the Kenya Maritime Authority is designed to provide safe, timely, and efficient transport services while maintaining vehicles in sound mechanical and clean conditions. Drivers play a fundamental part in ensuring staff mobility, facilitating official assignments, and upholding the Authority’s professional image through safe and courteous driving practices.
By operating and maintaining assigned vehicles, drivers directly support the day-to-day activities of the Authority, enabling staff to attend meetings, inspections, and official duties across various locations. In addition, they are expected to safeguard the condition of vehicles by adhering to maintenance schedules, promptly reporting mechanical problems, and ensuring compliance with traffic laws and safety standards.
Duties and Responsibilities
The duties of a Driver within the Authority encompass operational, maintenance, and reporting responsibilities. These include but are not limited to:
- Maintaining the cleanliness of the vehicle both internally and externally to reflect the professional image of the Authority.
- Keeping up-to-date and accurate work tickets for all vehicle usage, capturing mileage, fuel consumption, destinations, and trip purposes.
- Cleaning the assigned motor vehicle regularly to ensure a tidy and presentable state suitable for staff transport and official assignments.
- Submitting timely reports on the condition, performance, and usage of the assigned vehicle to the supervising officer.
- Promptly reporting any mechanical faults, accidents, or operational challenges encountered during use of the motor vehicle to the relevant authority for immediate attention.
- Ensuring the assigned vehicle is maintained in proper mechanical working condition by adhering to servicing schedules, conducting basic checks, and monitoring vehicle performance.
- Supporting staff mobility by driving them to official duties, meetings, and assignments, ensuring adherence to traffic regulations and safety standards.
- Observing defensive driving techniques to guarantee safety of passengers, vehicle, and other road users.
- Maintaining confidentiality and integrity in the course of executing transport duties, especially during sensitive assignments.
- Performing any other duties related to vehicle operation and management as may be assigned by the supervisor.
Person Specifications
To be considered for appointment to this grade, an applicant must meet the following minimum requirements:
- A minimum of a mean grade D+ (plus) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
- Possession of the Occupational Trade Test II Certificate from a recognized examining body.
- A valid driving license with classes relevant to the type of vehicle to be driven.
- A valid Certificate of Good Conduct issued by the Kenya Police Service, renewable every two years.
- A Defensive Driving Certificate obtained from a recognized institution.
- At least three (3) years of proven driving experience in a reputable organization.
- A valid First Aid Certificate from St. John Ambulance or another recognized institution, with training lasting not less than one (1) week.
