Job Summary
The La Riba Universal Banker will be responsible for delivering Islamic Banking business growth, ensuring compliance with regulatory and internal control standards, and maintaining exceptional customer service standards. The role is integral to ensuring Absa’s Islamic Banking segment continues to grow, while delivering quality, Shariah-compliant financial solutions that meet customer needs.
Key Responsibilities
1. Business Growth (60%)
- Implement and drive Islamic Banking business strategic initiatives within the branch to boost new business acquisition and grow wallet share from existing customers.
- Build a deep understanding of all Retail and Business Banking Islamic Banking products to meet customer requirements effectively.
- Manage portfolio risks in line with the Bank’s risk appetite.
- Collaborate with other functions—including direct sales, asset finance, corporate and investment banking, and bancassurance—to maximise cross-selling opportunities and improve customer profiling.
- Support product development through continuous feedback from clients and market intelligence.
- Monitor customer trends, government directives, and regulatory changes to ensure the Bank remains competitive and compliant.
- Contribute to branch-level Islamic Banking sales strategy and coordinate marketing approaches for new and existing clients.
- Grow personal portfolio by cross-selling, onboarding new accounts, and ensuring new-to-bank accounts are properly funded.
- Ensure quality sales processes and compliance in customer onboarding.
- Regularly review performance against daily targets and develop action plans to close any gaps.
- Actively participate in branch campaigns to support business growth.
- Ensure customer experience standards are upheld during service delivery.
- Collaborate with the Branch Manager to ensure ownership of branch performance and alignment with the Bank’s overall growth and transformation strategy.
2. Internal Controls and Risk Management (10%)
- Adhere strictly to Absa’s policies and procedures in handling all products and services.
- Ensure compliance with Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) requirements for both new and existing clients.
- Manage operational risks effectively to prevent financial losses arising from lapses.
- Control costs within the assigned operational area.
- Conduct and support internal snap checks as guided by branch management.
- Ensure accurate booking of new business and timely collection of all applicable fees, commissions, and charges.
- Maintain up-to-date and accurate customer records in the Bank’s systems.
3. Customer Experience (20%)
- Deliver exceptional customer service in every interaction.
- Ensure all turnaround times (TAT) for account opening, loan processing, and general service requests are consistently met.
- Address customer concerns promptly and escalate where necessary to guarantee timely resolution.
- Maintain branch Net Promoter Scores (NPS) within set standards.
- Work with the Branch Manager to coordinate customer service initiatives and gather feedback for continuous improvement.
- Monitor service queues and ensure customers are served efficiently, managing both peak and off-peak work plans.
4. Capacity Building and People Management (10%)
- Promote a positive work environment that encourages collaboration, teamwork, and productivity within the branch.
- Complete all assigned e-learning and training activities within the required timelines.
- Identify training needs, support professional development, and contribute to succession planning.
- Manage personal leave plans in consultation with line management to ensure operational continuity.
Role/Person Specification
Qualifications
- A Business-Related Degree from a recognized university.
Preferred Experience
- Previous experience in Islamic Banking.
- Familiarity with a range of banking products, including current and savings accounts, loans, and credit cards.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of Absa Retail and Business Banking product strategies.
- Awareness of Islamic banking culture and Shariah principles.
- Knowledge of Islamic financial instruments and competitor practices.
- Familiarity with Shariah law, Shariah audits, and oversight by Shariah boards.
