Job Description
The Laboratory Technologist will play a critical role in conducting laboratory analyses of biological samples to support both clinical trials and laboratory-based research within the KEMRI/CGHR Malaria Division. The candidate will be responsible for a wide range of laboratory procedures and will ensure that high standards of accuracy, reliability, and timeliness are consistently achieved.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct laboratory analyses of biological samples with a focus on malaria microscopy, haematology, biochemistry, immunology, and molecular biology.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring proper calibration, cleanliness, and readiness for use.
- Prepare samples for testing and conduct assays according to established protocols and standards.
- Ensure strict adherence to laboratory safety and biosafety guidelines.
- Document results accurately and maintain clear, well-organized records of all laboratory activities.

Job Description
The Senior Research Scientist will be based at the Malaria Division of KEMRI’s Malaria Laboratories at CGHR in Kisumu, western Kenya. This role is designed for a highly skilled and motivated research scientist with advanced training and a proven background in laboratory sciences. The position is central to advancing innovative laboratory technologies and driving high-quality scientific output in collaboration with both local and international partners.
The successful candidate will closely collaborate with CDC’s Division of Parasitic Diseases and Malaria, the NOMADs Nanopore Technology group, and other global experts to adapt and expand laboratory technologies. This will include applying novel diagnostic platforms, conducting in-depth analyses, and ensuring knowledge transfer within the KEMRI/CGHR team.
Key Responsibilities
- Support adaptation and implementation of innovative laboratory technologies and assays.
- Conduct complex laboratory analyses, interpret data, and ensure accuracy in reporting results.
- Work in collaboration with CDC laboratory scientists in Atlanta, Nairobi, and other global partners to expand laboratory capacities at KEMRI/CGHR.
- Lead efforts in data analysis, interpretation, and dissemination through reports, publications, and scientific manuscripts.
- Train, mentor, and supervise laboratory staff, ensuring knowledge transfer and capacity building.
- Contribute to project progress reports and actively participate in research dissemination forums, conferences, and workshops.
- Collaborate in developing strategies to expand the impact of laboratory innovations across projects.
