Fresh Life is seeking to recruit a QHSE Associate to be based in Eldoret. The successful candidate will play a critical role in supporting the coordination of Quality, Health, Safety, and Environmental (QHSE) activities. This position involves ensuring compliance with legal requirements, promoting safety and health practices across facilities, and embedding a culture of environmental stewardship within the organization’s operations.
Job Description
The QHSE Associate will be responsible for implementing QHSE policies and procedures across Fresh Life’s organic waste collection facilities and other operational areas in Eldoret. The role will involve close collaboration with the operations team and will require proactive engagement in regulatory compliance, health and safety management, training, audits, and overall quality assurance.
The responsibilities for this position are categorized into five core areas: compliance and regulatory support, workplace safety and health, training and coaching, quality assurance and audits, and collaboration and support.
1. Compliance and Regulatory Support
One of the central responsibilities of the QHSE Associate is to ensure operations align with regulatory standards set by both internal policies and external government agencies. This requires ongoing monitoring, assessment, and process development to maintain legal compliance.
Key responsibilities include:
- Participating in the assessment, design, implementation, and maintenance of process changes necessary to achieve and sustain compliance with workplace safety and environmental standards established by regulatory authorities such as the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
- Contributing to the development of occupational health and safety (OHS) policies and programs that align with best practices and organizational needs.
- Supporting the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and work instructions for various operational processes, ensuring clarity and adherence to safety and environmental requirements.
- Supporting the implementation, updating, and review of Fresh Life’s QHSE system, including participation in internal and external audits, while ensuring systems remain compliant with prevailing legislation and company directives.
2. Workplace Safety and Health
Ensuring a safe and healthy workplace is essential for both employees and the communities served. The QHSE Associate will take an active role in strengthening workplace safety measures, incident preparedness, and employee wellness.
Responsibilities in this area include:
- Coordinating regular workplace audits and inspections, and leading the collection, analysis, and reporting of QHSE data across Fresh Life’s operations. This includes developing corrective and preventive action plans (CAPA) for identified risks or non-compliance.
- Supporting operational teams in the timely resolution of QHSE corrective and preventive actions, ensuring a cycle of continuous improvement.
- Supporting the execution of fire preparedness programs, accident and incident response procedures, and broader employee wellness initiatives.
- Coordinating preventive healthcare activities for employees, including organizing deworming and vaccination sessions.
- Maintaining accurate and up-to-date QHSE documentation, including general registers, training records, material safety data sheets (MSDS), and other relevant compliance documents.
3. Training and Coaching
Capacity-building is an integral aspect of embedding safety and quality within an organization. The QHSE Associate will be responsible for delivering training and supporting operational staff in adopting safety practices and organizational standards.
Key tasks under this responsibility include:
- Coordinating QHSE training sessions across operational teams, including safety inductions, toolbox talks, and other learning initiatives designed to enhance employee knowledge and compliance.
- Supporting the implementation of workplace organization frameworks such as the 5S methodology (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) to improve efficiency, safety, and operational consistency.
- Coaching operational teams on 5S practices and supporting innovative improvements to enhance workplace organization.
- Leading process diagnostic sessions, such as root cause analyses (RCAs), to identify underlying issues and develop corrective measures for safety and quality challenges.
4. Quality Assurance and Audits
Ensuring consistent quality across Fresh Life’s operations requires robust systems of monitoring, inspection, and reporting. The QHSE Associate will be actively engaged in quality assurance processes and audits, both at the operational and organizational level.
Key responsibilities in this area include:
- Conducting regular field visits to verify the quality of installations of Fresh Life Toilets (FLTs), ensuring that work adheres to the organization’s quality standards.
- Assisting in preparing reports on installation quality trends, performance metrics, and other key indicators of quality performance.
- Conducting inspections of incoming goods and materials to confirm compliance with company standards and specifications.
- Supporting the audit team in gathering data and evidence required for internal process audits across manufacturing, logistics, and other operational departments.
5. Collaboration and Support
The QHSE Associate will act as a liaison between different teams to ensure that quality, health, safety, and environmental standards are consistently applied across all operations. Strong collaboration and support will be critical to success in this role.
Responsibilities under this area include:
- Working closely with operational teams on all QHSE matters to ensure adherence to both internal standards and external regulatory requirements.
- Supporting cross-departmental initiatives aimed at strengthening safety culture, environmental responsibility, and quality performance across the organization.
Candidate Profile
The role of QHSE Associate requires a combination of academic preparation, technical expertise, and hands-on experience in quality, health, safety, and environmental management.
Candidates are expected to possess:
- A bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, or Public Health.
- Between one to two years of proven experience in QHSE-related work.
- Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, with strong skills in Microsoft Excel for data analysis and reporting.
- Strong report writing abilities and analytical skills.
- The capacity to respond promptly to emergencies and work effectively under pressure.
Work Location
This position is based in Eldoret, Kenya, where Fresh Life operates its organic waste collection and sanitation facilities. The QHSE Associate will be expected to work closely with teams on-site to implement and monitor safety, health, quality, and environmental systems.
