About the AKU Cancer Center and the Clinical Research Unit (CRU)

The Aga Khan University Cancer Center is modeled after the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) Community Cancer Centers, focusing on holistic and multidisciplinary approaches to cancer treatment, research, and prevention. The Center operates through five core programmatic efforts: Experimental Therapeutics, Cancer Genetics, Genomic Medicine, Population Health, and Psychosocial Oncology. The Clinical Research Unit (CRU) serves as a core facility within the Cancer Center’s Experimental Therapeutics program. It is designed to support the University’s clinical and translational research agenda, ensuring that research activities comply with International Council for Harmonisation – Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP) standards. The CRU provides comprehensive support for human subjects research, from conceptualization through to completion, maintaining rigorous ethical and quality standards.

Job Summary

The position of Associate Director, Cancer Center, offers an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the strategic and operational advancement of cancer research and treatment at Aga Khan University. Reporting to the Director of the Cancer Center, the Associate Director will play a key leadership role in shaping the direction of the Center and its affiliated programs, including co-responsibility for the Clinical Research Unit (CRU).

This individual will also play a critical role in developing and executing strategies that align with institutional goals, driving innovation in cancer prevention, control, and treatment.

This full-time position is based in Nairobi, Kenya.


Detailed Job Description

1. Strategic Planning
The Associate Director will support the development and execution of the Cancer Center’s long-term strategic plan. This includes identifying emerging trends in cancer research, clinical trials, and patient care, and incorporating them into the Center’s initiatives. The role involves fostering partnerships with research organizations, pharmaceutical companies, and external stakeholders to advance collaborative projects.

The incumbent will also facilitate stakeholder engagement with faculty, research staff, patients, and institutional partners. A core responsibility will be to ensure that the Center’s programs reflect global best practices while remaining responsive to local health challenges and community needs.

2. Administrative Leadership
In collaboration with the Director, the Associate Director will provide administrative oversight for all operational functions of the Cancer Center. This includes managing daily workflows, ensuring efficient resource utilization, and maintaining high standards of performance across all units.

The position requires mentoring and supporting administrative staff, promoting a culture of excellence, collaboration, and accountability. The individual will be expected to implement systems that enhance operational efficiency and enable data-driven decision-making.

Requirements

• A MD/PhD in a healthcare-related field with at least 5 years of leadership experience in a clinical research environment; or
• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a clinical or health-related field with at least 10 years of experience in strategic management within clinical operations, clinical research, or clinical trials.
• At least 5 years of experience as a principal investigator leading a clinical trials program.
• Proven experience in strategic planning, administration, and operations management in a clinical research environment, either in academia or the pharmaceutical sector.
• Strong financial management skills, including experience in budgeting and resource allocation.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and manage multidisciplinary teams.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal relationship skills.
• Familiarity with oncology care, clinical research methodologies, and clinical trial operations will be considered an advantage.
