Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) – through its engagement in the Climate, Peace, and Security (CPS) nexus – supports countries in addressing the complex interactions between environmental change, conflict dynamics, and peacebuilding. The internship position focuses on Somalia, a country facing multiple environmental and security challenges, including climate-induced displacement, resource scarcity, and fragile governance structures.
The intern will work within the UNEP Nairobi office to support research, analysis, and communications related to the CPS agenda in Somalia, contributing to policy-relevant insights and outreach materials that promote peace, climate resilience, and sustainable development.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Programme Officer, the intern will assist in:
- Conducting research on climate change impacts, environmental degradation, and security dynamics in Somalia.
- Supporting the development of analytical reports, policy briefs, and case studies on climate and peace linkages.
- Assisting in data collection, literature reviews, and qualitative analysis.
- Drafting communications content, including web articles, newsletters, social media posts, and visual materials to enhance awareness of the CPS agenda.
- Supporting event organization, webinars, and stakeholder engagement activities.
- Contributing to knowledge management and documentation of ongoing CPS initiatives.
- Assisting in the preparation of presentations and project summaries for internal and external use.
Qualifications
- Education: Applicants must be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate programme (Master’s or equivalent) in Environmental Studies, Political Science, International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, Climate Policy, or related fields.
- Experience: Previous experience in research, communications, or development work is desirable but not required.
- Language: Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Somali or other UN languages is an asset.
Competencies
- Strong research and analytical skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Familiarity with environmental peacebuilding and climate-security frameworks.
- Ability to work effectively in a multicultural and multidisciplinary team.
- Proficiency in standard office and data analysis tools (MS Office, Excel, PowerPoint).
Additional Information
- The internship is unpaid and full-time, typically lasting three to six months.
- Interns are expected to work five days per week (35–40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member.
- Candidates are encouraged to ensure that their university provides insurance coverage for the internship period.
