Job Description
The University Counsellor will provide professional counselling services to students and staff to promote psychological well-being and personal development. This role is critical in fostering a supportive campus environment that enhances mental health, academic success, and overall wellness within the university community. The counsellor will also contribute to the development of guidance programs and initiatives that address emerging psychosocial challenges among students.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide individual and group counselling to students and staff on personal, academic, social, and career-related concerns.
- Conduct needs assessments to identify mental health issues affecting the university community and develop targeted interventions.
- Develop and implement preventive and educational programs on topics such as stress management, self-awareness, conflict resolution, and interpersonal relationships.
- Support students experiencing crises, trauma, or emotional distress through timely and confidential counselling services.
- Maintain detailed and confidential counselling records in compliance with professional and institutional standards.
- Collaborate with academic departments, student affairs offices, and other service units to provide holistic student support.
- Organize workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns to promote mental health and wellness across the campus.
- Offer consultation and guidance to faculty and administrative staff on handling student behavioural or psychological concerns.
- Refer clients to external mental health professionals or agencies when specialized intervention is required.
- Participate in policy development, implementation, and review processes related to student welfare and counselling services.
Additional Duties
- Contribute to research and documentation on counselling trends and mental health issues in higher education.
- Supervise peer counsellors and provide training programs to enhance their competence.
- Prepare periodic reports and statistics on counselling activities for submission to the Dean of Students.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community mental health institutions to strengthen referral networks.
- Engage in continuous professional development to maintain high standards of counselling practice and ethical conduct.
