About the African School of Governance (ASG)

The African School of Governance is an independent Graduate professional school, offering world-class public policy education with distinctive African identity.

The African School of Governance (ASG) seeks to address challenges in:

  • Leadership and mindsets: There is an absence of purposeful local leadership mindset, which hampers the strengthening of policy and management skills.
  • Policy Implementation and Effective Execution: African leaders often face challenges in effectively implementing policies, stemming from limitations in human capital and execution capabilities.
  • Evidence-based policymaking: Policy decisions often lack a comprehensive and contextually relevant foundation of high-quality local facts. When such a foundation does exist, the connections between these facts and the policymaking process tend to be tenuous at best.
  • African voice and ownership: Africa’s voice in global debates, especially those pertinent to the continent, is weaker than its rightful influence.
  • ASG Vision: The African School of Governance is a distinctively African, globally leading, independent graduate professional school that can impact governance and public policy across the continent, improving the lives of citizens across a wide range of outcomes.
  • ASG Mission: The African School of Government seeks to take on the most pressing challenges of the continent and the world through a mix of academic programs, research, and policy engagement. It will train many of the region’s and the world’s best future leaders in public service, primarily in government and policy, but also in the private sector, security, media, civil society, and research. It will also provide cutting-edge research and host high-level events to generate Africa-centred ideas that will advance solutions to the challenges facing the continent and indeed the world.

What will the ASG offer?

Education

The ASG will offer five academic programmes that cater for students throughout their learning journeys:

  • Core Master’s Degree – Masters in Public Administration (2 years): A full-time, in-person programme that can accommodate ~160 students from across the continent
  • Executive master’s degree – Executive Masters in Public Administration (2 years): A part-time, hybrid programme (remote learning with periodic campus visits) open to ~50 students.
  • General Executive Courses (2-3 weeks on average each): Hybrid short courses open to ~50 senior executives each.
  • Young Leaders Programme – YLP (6 weeks): A full-time hybrid programme offered to high-potential undergraduates and recent graduates.
  • Senior Leadership Fellowship – SLP (6-month residency): Offered to selected leaders nearing the end of their careers, who are considering how to leave a legacy on the continent.

Research

The school plans to launch four integrated research centres at the outset, which will be aligned with inaugural leadership: (1) home-grown innovations, (2) African history and leadership, (3) pan-African and regional integration, and (4) effective delivery and use of technology. Its research focus areas will grow and evolve as the school reaches maturity.

Policy Engagement

ASG will directly impact policy and implementation in multiple ways. It will disseminate knowledge through diverse means such as policy briefs, reports, and videos, convening cross- sector stakeholders through large- and small-scale events. It will launch a social innovation incubator to support high-potential social entrepreneurs, and a unique government innovation hub to assist governments in using design thinking to develop novel solutions to large-scale societal challenges.
