BOMA, in partnership with Smart Regional Consultants (SRC), is launching an innovative youth-focused initiative in Isiolo and Marsabit Counties. The Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Economic Development (SEED) for Vulnerable and Marginalized Youth in Northern Kenya is designed to address youth unemployment and radicalization challenges in the region. By leveraging BOMA’s extensive experience and strong community partnerships, this program will equip pastoralist youth with the skills and resources needed to create sustainable livelihoods and lift themselves and their families out of extreme poverty.
As part of this initiative, we are looking for passionate and driven individuals to join us as Mentors to oversee the Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP), providing guidance and business support to young entrepreneurs. Position: Mentor, SEED – Isiolo
Responsibilities:
- Manage the Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP), a BOMA initiative designed to help low-income youth start businesses to improve their livelihoods.
- Provide mentoring and guidance to multiple small business enterprises, ensuring their sustainability and growth.
- Collaborate with the community through Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) and work with BOMA Location Committees to identify eligible youth based on set criteria.
- Conduct regular meetings with established business groups, helping them make sound business decisions and offering professional guidance where needed.
- Deliver business and savings skills training, and mentor business groups in designated locations and surrounding manyattas.
- Collect and analyze data, surveying individuals on their living standards, participation in savings groups, and other relevant economic factors.
- Serve as a representative of BOMA in designated locations, attending local development committee meetings and advocating for community entrepreneurship.
- Provide performance reports on businesses and savings groups to the Field Officer.
- Conduct a minimum number of required visits per week to business and savings groups and upload collected data at least once a month.
Qualifications:
- At least a Diploma in Community Development, Social Work, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of one (1) year experience in managing livelihood and community development projects, with a focus on youth entrepreneurship.
- Proven experience in data collection is an added advantage.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect and communicate effectively with youth entrepreneurs and community members.
- Self-driven and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Must be a native of the respective ward where you are applying and have a working knowledge of English, Swahili, and the local language.
- Valid motorcycle license (Class A1/A2) and experience riding a motorcycle is highly preferred.
- If not currently licensed, willingness to obtain a motorcycle license within the first three (3) months of employment is strongly encouraged.
