Job Description: Senior Investment Associate
Key Responsibilities
The Senior Investment Associate will support critical investment, financial, and strategic operations, contributing significantly to PowerGen’s mission of transforming Africa’s power sector. The core activities and duties are categorized below:
1. Corporate Fund Closing Support
- Assist in the structuring and execution of corporate equity and debt investor processes.
- Manage the preparation of due diligence documentation and facilitate Q&A processes with potential investors.
- Contribute to financial modeling for corporate and project-level investments.
- Participate in the structuring of:
- Corporate vs. project-specific debt
- Local currency vs. HoldCo-level financing structures
- Non-commercial guarantees and instruments
- Ensure all investment criteria are met to enable timely capital disbursements and drawdowns.
2. Financial Modeling and Investment Decision Support
- Improve and manage financial model templates used by commercial owners within the organization.
- Provide training and technical support to commercial teams for effective model usage.
- Review financial models of projects at Investment Committee stages (IC1 and IC2).
- Offer strategic input and recommendations for final investment decisions.
3. Project Performance & Reinvestment Management
- Track the performance of project assets, measuring financial and operational metrics.
- Analyze and recommend reinvestment strategies and project expansion opportunities based on performance outcomes.
4. Long-term Capital Structure Strategy Development
- Help design a clear and strategic capital structure framework for the organization.
- Focus areas include:
- Debt-to-equity (D/E) ratios
- Treasury and project bank account management
- Foreign exchange (FX) planning and management
- Lender engagement and selection processes
- Structuring of corporate-level financing mechanisms
5. Support for Strategic Operations and Cross-functional Projects
- Collaborate with the Operations department to identify and execute high-impact internal projects.
- Lead or provide input on cross-departmental initiatives aimed at improving efficiency, cost management, and scalability.
6. Strategic Input Across Business Functions
- Contribute to the overall company strategy, particularly for:
- Grid and Commercial & Industrial (C&I) business verticals
- Pricing strategy for CapEx and electricity tariffs
- Organizational and entity structuring to support business growth
- Business development and partnership formulation
7. Project Leadership for Strategic Initiatives
- Manage and track performance of high-level strategic projects.
- Ensure resource allocation aligns with project goals and timelines.
- Monitor KPIs and adjust strategies as necessary to meet business objectives.
Required Competencies & Experience
PowerGen is seeking a high-caliber professional who is passionate about transforming Africa’s energy landscape and brings a solid foundation in investment and infrastructure finance. The ideal candidate should have:
- 2-4 years’ experience in investment, project development, or project finance within:
- Utility or concessions companies
- Project finance/infrastructure departments of investment banks
- Development Finance Institutions (DFIs)
- Financial advisory firms focused on infrastructure/PPP
- Infrastructure-focused private equity firms
- Strong project management experience in overseeing complex operational and strategic initiatives.
- Strategic Thinking Abilities:
- Ability to think long-term and align strategic initiatives with broader business goals.
- Experience in conducting market analysis and competitive assessments.
- Understanding of Infrastructure Contracts and Policies:
- Knowledge of concession agreements, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), EPC and O&M contracts, and public-private partnership (PPP) structuring.
- Proven Deal Experience:
- Demonstrated history of closing infrastructure or energy transactions.
- Familiarity with African markets and financial trends in infrastructure financing.
- Business Development and Client Management Skills:
- Strong client-focused approach.
- Ability to identify and cultivate relationships with business partners.
- Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
- Excellent written and verbal English communication.
- French proficiency is considered a plus.
- Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with teams, investors, and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
