Job Purpose: Senior Driver (G3)
The primary purpose of this role is to provide efficient and safe transportation services for senior WFP staff, high-ranking UN officials, and visitors, while also supporting the coordination of transport-related services.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
The Senior Driver will work under delegated authority and will be responsible for the following:
- Transportation Services:
- Provide reliable and safe transportation for senior WFP personnel, visiting UN dignitaries, and other officials.
- Translate basic conversations as required from/to the local language.
- Route and Schedule Coordination:
- Plan and assign routes and schedules for other drivers to support service efficiency.
- Airport and Entry Point Assistance:
- Meet and assist official visitors at airports and other entry points.
- Facilitate visa processing and customs formalities.
- Vehicle Log and Maintenance:
- Maintain accurate vehicle log books and report mechanical issues to supervisors.
- Monitor fuel consumption and support cost-efficiency through effective vehicle usage.
- Vehicle Readiness:
- Ensure that vehicles are properly maintained and equipped for travel.
- Coordinate vehicle servicing and check condition of onboard equipment.
- Field Deliveries and Accident Protocol:
- Follow WFP rules for field deliveries and report any issues or accidents promptly.
- Administrative Support:
- Conduct basic office duties such as filing, photocopying, mailing, and bill payments when not performing driving duties.
Required Skills and Knowledge
- Good knowledge of local traffic laws, chauffeur protocols, courtesies, and local roads.
- Ability to assess vehicle fitness and perform minor mechanical repairs.
- Proficiency in emergency response procedures and basic first aid.
- Basic understanding of transport services and ability to coordinate with other drivers.
- Familiarity with the safe operation of fire extinguishers and other safety equipment.
- High level of responsibility, professionalism, client orientation, and tact.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Education: Completion of Secondary School Education. Formal driver’s training is required, along with a valid driver’s license following local regulations.
- Experience:
- Minimum of three years’ relevant work experience as a driver.
- Preference for experience in international organizations, embassies, or the UN system.
- Proven safe driving record and experience with a variety of vehicle types, including vans and trucks.
- Experience in defensive driving is an added advantage.
- Language Proficiency:
- Fluency in both written and spoken English and Swahili.
