Kibabii University (KIBU) is a dynamic public institution located in Bungoma County, western Kenya. Its origins trace back to 1932 when the Mill Hill Fathers established a teachers’ training college in the region. Over the decades, this institution evolved, and in 2011, it became Kibabii University College, a constituent college of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. The university achieved full-fledged status in November 2015 upon receiving its charter from President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Today, KIBU offers a wide range of academic programs through its faculties and schools, including the Faculty of Education and Social Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, Faculty of Business and Economics, and the School of Computing and Informatics . The university provides undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs, with a notable focus on Information Technology and Computer Science, aligning with Kenya’s Vision 2030 development agenda.
Kibabii University has experienced significant growth since its establishment. The student population has increased from an initial 3,500 to over 8,500, with plans to admit 4,600 first-year students in the 2023/24 academic year Nation. The university has also expanded its academic offerings from four programs in 2015 to 64, including 23 master’s and 12 doctorate programs. It has established international collaborations with institutions such as the University of Oviedo in Spain and Cornell University in the USA, enhancing its global engagement and research capabilities
With its motto “Knowledge for Development,” Kibabii University continues to contribute to the educational and socio-economic advancement of Kenya and the broader East African region.
