The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) invites early-career professionals and recent postgraduates to apply for a unique and impactful internship opportunity in Nairobi, Kenya. Internship: Productive Use of Energy

Location: Nairobi, Kenya
Position Type: Full-time Internship
Duration: Minimum of three months, with the possibility of one-time renewal for up to six months
Start Date: Flexible, between April and July 2025

Position Overview

The intern will play a key role in supporting GEAPP’s Africa team in driving its clean cooking and PUE initiatives. This includes active involvement in the Global eCooking Coalition (GeCCo), proposal development, stakeholder engagement, and internal strategic activities aimed at economic development through energy.

This is a hands-on opportunity to gain experience at the intersection of energy access, clean cooking, economic empowerment, and sustainable development in Africa. While the internship does not guarantee future employment, it offers significant exposure to international development, energy policy, and project management.


Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will support various functions within GEAPP’s Demand, Jobs, and Livelihoods (DJL) team and work collaboratively with other team members and stakeholders. The main duties and responsibilities include:

1. Program and Stakeholder Support

  • Track activities and engagements under the Global eCooking Coalition (GeCCo).
  • Maintain detailed partner engagement logs.
  • Support the management of key strategic relationships with stakeholders and collaborators.

2. Fundraising Proposal Development

  • Assist in drafting, structuring, and coordinating fundraising proposals for PUE and clean cooking initiatives.
  • Support internal strategy development processes, including the formulation of GEAPP’s new “Productive Africa” strategy aligned with the broader M300 vision.

3. Research and Analysis

  • Conduct topical research on clean energy access, energy transition, and economic development.
  • Gather and analyze data on related policy and market trends.
  • Collaborate with project leads on the preparation of briefs and memos based on research findings and market assessments.

4. Project Management Support

  • Provide coordination and project management support for ongoing initiatives within the DJL team.
  • Support the planning and execution of webinars, workshops, and other program events.

5. Content Development

  • Draft quality deliverables such as project updates, research summaries, stakeholder memos, and briefers.
  • Contribute to the development of presentations and slide decks for internal and external use.

6. Administrative Support

  • Assist with program administration and logistics related to the execution of workshops, webinars, and strategic meetings.
  • Carry out additional duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements and Expectations

This internship targets early-career professionals and recent postgraduates with limited work experience. Below are the expectations and competencies that candidates must meet or demonstrate:

Education

  • Enrolled in or recently graduated with a Master’s or PhD in Engineering or other disciplines related to energy access policy, clean energy transition, or energy sector reforms in developing countries.

Languages

  • Proficiency in English (both written and spoken) is required.
  • Knowledge of French or Portuguese is desirable but not mandatory.

Work Experience

  • Less than 3 years of professional experience preferred.
  • A demonstrated interest in electricity policy, energy finance, energy economics, or related areas will be an asset.
  • Familiarity with energy policy development or project implementation in developing countries is an advantage.

Core Competencies

The ideal candidate will be proficient in at least three of the following mandatory areas:

  1. Research and Analytical Skills
    • Ability to conduct and synthesize research on trends, policies, and technologies related to energy access.
  2. Data Analysis and Visualization
    • Competency in tools such as Excel or similar for data interpretation and visualization.
  3. Communication and Writing Skills
    • Strong writing skills for creating reports, memos, and presentations.
    • Experience preparing narrative documents and slide decks.
  4. Basic Financial Analysis
    • Understanding of financial principles for assessing project costs and sustainability.

Additional Desirable Competencies:

  • Project Management: Familiarity with tools and methodologies for planning and monitoring project activities.
  • GIS and Mapping Skills: Ability to use Geographic Information Systems for visualizing access gaps.
  • Digital and Technical Proficiency: Knowledge of digital tools, software applications, databases, or coding.
  • Energy Policy & Regulatory Understanding: Interest in learning about policy frameworks and finance systems influencing energy access in developing markets.
  • Technical Knowledge of Power Sector: Interest in renewable energy technologies, power transmission, distribution, and sector operations.
