Purpose of the Role
The Breast Surgeon will play a pivotal role in delivering expert surgical care to patients presenting with both benign and malignant breast diseases. The specialist will be instrumental in developing and maintaining high standards in breast cancer care, participating in multidisciplinary care planning, and engaging in both clinical and academic leadership.
The position is structured to provide meaningful opportunities for surgical practice, clinical teaching, research participation, and involvement in the hospital’s outreach and public awareness campaigns around breast health and early cancer detection.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for a broad range of clinical, academic, and collaborative functions, including:
- Specialized Surgical Care
- Perform a full spectrum of breast-related surgical procedures, such as lumpectomies, simple and radical mastectomies, excisional biopsies, incisional biopsies, and sentinel lymph node biopsies.
- Engage in reconstructive planning with plastic surgery colleagues to ensure optimal aesthetic and functional outcomes for patients.
- Ensure perioperative care of surgical patients adheres to modern, evidence-based protocols.
- Multidisciplinary Collaboration
- Function as an integral part of the hospital’s breast care team, working closely with radiologists, oncologists, pathologists, plastic surgeons, and nursing staff to plan and coordinate patient treatment.
- Lead or participate in multidisciplinary tumor board discussions and shared decision-making on complex clinical cases.
- Patient-Centered Counseling and Support
- Provide thorough counseling for patients and their families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, potential risks, and postoperative expectations.
- Ensure that pre-operative and post-operative care is aligned with the highest clinical standards and patient preferences.
- Clinical Documentation and Quality Assurance
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records, including surgical notes, treatment plans, and outcomes.
- Uphold clinical documentation best practices and comply with hospital and regulatory protocols.
- Guideline Development and Best Practice Promotion
- Contribute actively to the formulation and regular review of institutional clinical guidelines, surgical protocols, and standard operating procedures for breast surgery.
- Lead initiatives to incorporate international best practices and new technologies into surgical care delivery.
- Training, Mentorship, and Academic Contribution
- Mentor surgical interns, medical officers, residents, and nursing personnel in surgical techniques, case management, and professional development.
- Offer didactic sessions, hands-on training, and support for continuing medical education within the department.
- Research and Clinical Audit
- Participate in clinical research projects, case reviews, and audit initiatives aimed at improving patient outcomes, surgical safety, and system efficiency.
- Present findings in hospital grand rounds, conferences, and peer-reviewed platforms where applicable.
- Public Health Engagement and Outreach
- Champion breast health awareness through hospital-organized community outreach programs, breast screening drives, and health education initiatives.
- Collaborate with NGOs, schools, women’s groups, and media to disseminate key messages on early detection and preventive care.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
To be considered for this critical role, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- A Master of Medicine (MMed) degree in General Surgery or its equivalent from a recognized institution.
- Subspecialty training or fellowship in Breast Surgery or Surgical Oncology is highly desirable.
- Full registration and current licensure with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
- A minimum of five (5) years of post-graduate surgical experience, with at least two (2) years in specialized breast surgery.
- Advanced knowledge of surgical oncology principles, diagnostic techniques, and evolving surgical interventions.
- Proficiency in managing complex surgical cases and coordinating care within a multidisciplinary setting.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with strong interpersonal and teamwork capabilities.
- A passion for teaching, mentorship, clinical innovation, and a demonstrable record of ethical medical practice.
