CIFOR-ICRAF Hiring Enumerators, Salary KES. 3,000 per day

by Lozano R

The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) envision a more equitable world where trees in all landscapes, from drylands to the humid tropics, enhance the environment and well-being for all. CIFOR and ICRAF are non-profit science institutions that build and apply evidence to today’s most pressing challenges, including energy insecurity and the climate and biodiversity crises.

Over a combined total of 65 years, we have built vast knowledge on forests and trees outside of forests in agricultural landscapes (agroforestry). Using a multidisciplinary approach, we seek to improve lives and to protect and restore ecosystems.

Our work focuses on innovative research, partnering for impact, and engaging with stakeholders on policies and practices to benefit people and the planet.

Founded in 1993 and 1978, CIFOR and ICRAF are members of CGIAR, a global research partnership for a food secure future dedicated to reducing poverty, enhancing food and nutrition security, and improving natural resources.

Overview

The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and World Agroforestry (ICRAF) are coordinating the implementation of the project Restoring Trees and Livelihoods in Kenya Project alongside their partners Self-Help Africa (SHA) and Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) International.

The pilot project, ‘Restoring Trees and Livelihoods in Kenya,’ aims to restore 32,500 hectares of land, enhance ecosystem services, improve the livelihoods of 30,000 households, and increase carbon storage in the landscape.

This will be achieved by the adoption of evergreening practices such as agroforestry, which includes the planting and managing of 2,103,143 trees.

This initiative is projected to sequester 1,294,264 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, which will be converted into certified carbon credits, contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.

ICRAF is therefore seeking to recruit Enumerators to tag planted trees and count trees managed by farmers in selected villages in Kitui and Baringo during 2022 and 2023 as part of the project.

Position: Enumerators

Job Summary:
The enumerators will play a crucial role in the data collection phase of the project by tagging trees using digital devices such as tablets. They will ensure that accurate and high-quality data is collected from the farmers’ fields, which will be fundamental in monitoring the project’s progress and impact.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Attend Enumerator Training
Enumerators will be required to participate in a detailed training program to gain a thorough and clear overview of the project’s context, objectives, relevance, and tools to be used for the tagging exercise. The training will provide them with the necessary knowledge and skills to carry out their tasks effectively.
  2. Conduct Tree Tagging Pretest and Actual Tagging
    • Participate in pretesting the tree tagging tools to ensure they function as intended and to familiarize themselves with the tagging process.
    • Carry out actual tagging on farmers’ fields, ensuring each tree is accurately tagged and recorded using the provided digital tools.
    • Use tablets to capture essential data related to tree species, location, and condition.
  3. Daily Team Review Meetings
    • Participate in team review meetings at the beginning and end of each day’s assignment.
    • Provide feedback on the challenges encountered and share learnings to improve the process.
    • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to address any issues arising during the data collection process.
  4. Ensure Data Accuracy and Quality
    • Ensure the data collected from the farmer’s field adheres to and complies with the required instructions to guarantee accuracy, clarity, consistency, and quality.
    • Validate data entries to minimize errors and inconsistencies.
  5. Full Coverage of Assigned Area
    • Ensure that all project farmers within the assigned enumeration area have their trees fully tagged, without leaving any assigned farmer uncovered.
    • Organize and plan the daily itinerary to optimize coverage and time management.
  6. Commitment to Task and Process
    • Understand and take responsibility for assigned tasks, remaining committed throughout the tagging exercise’s period and process.
    • Maintain high levels of professionalism and integrity while interacting with farmers and stakeholders.
  7. Feedback and Communication
    • Report and relay feedback as instructed, ensuring open communication channels with supervisors.
    • Communicate any challenges, obstacles, or unusual occurrences encountered during the tagging exercise.

Education, Knowledge, and Experience

  • Degree in forestry, natural resource management, or a related field.
  • Good understanding of research ethics, confidentiality, and privacy.
  • Proficiency in using digital devices, especially tablets, for data collection.
  • Knowledge of the local language is an added advantage.
  • Must be keen, observant, and pay attention to detail, especially in recording the responses.
  • High integrity and punctuality.
  • Strong teamwork and collaborative skills.

Terms and Conditions

  • Duration of Engagement: The enumerators will be engaged for a total of twenty days, including:
    • Two days of training, pretesting the tool, and reflections.
    • Eighteen days for actual data collection.
  • Daily Compensation: Enumerators will receive a daily payment of KES 3,000 upon delivering quality data.
  • Transport Reimbursement: Enumerators will receive transport reimbursement for commuting to the field sites.
  • Timesheets Requirement: Enumerators will be required to fill in timesheets to indicate the actual number of days worked.
