Job Title: Maternity In-Charge

Reports To: Chief Nursing Officer

A. Job Purpose

The Maternity In-Charge will be responsible for planning, organizing, and coordinating all maternity services, ensuring the provision of high-standard nursing care in accordance with the hospital’s policies and professional standards. The role demands strong clinical leadership, efficient resource management, staff development, and commitment to patient safety and satisfaction.


B. Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Clinical Leadership & Patient Care

  • Deliver professional and high-standard nursing care in maternity, including antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum services.
  • Oversee and ensure adherence to clinical protocols, infection control measures, and respectful maternity care practices.
  • Ensure nursing care plans are based on scientific, evidence-based practices tailored to individual patient needs.
  • Conduct regular rounds to monitor patients and support timely identification and escalation of high-risk cases.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential documentation, including proper shift handovers.

2. Staff Management & Development

  • Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary team of midwives, nurses, and support staff toward achieving departmental goals.
  • Review and approve monthly work schedules (ROTA) for optimal staffing.
  • Ensure maternity staff are oriented and adhere to SOPs, emergency protocols, and institutional guidelines.
  • Identify staff training needs and coordinate relevant professional development sessions.

3. Quality Assurance, Safety & Client Satisfaction

  • Monitor patient satisfaction and handle complaints with professionalism and urgency.
  • Participate in hospital-wide quality improvement initiatives and ensure departmental compliance.
  • Contribute to policy development and implementation of maternity-related procedures and clinical care pathways.
  • Support maternal and perinatal audits and ensure implementation of resulting action plans.

4. Operational & Resource Management

  • Oversee inventory management within the maternity unit to ensure resource availability and minimize wastage.
  • Coordinate with internal departments like pharmacy, laboratory, pediatrics, theatre, and radiology to ensure timely and integrated patient care.

5. Communication & Collaboration

  • Foster respectful communication between staff, patients, and their families.
  • Collaborate with obstetricians, anesthetists, pediatricians, and other departments for seamless service delivery.
  • Represent the maternity unit in relevant hospital committees and contribute to institutional strategy and improvement efforts.

C. Minimum Requirements / Qualifications

  • Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nurse/Midwife (KRCHN/M) from a recognized institution.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Midwifery is an added advantage.
  • Valid Nursing Council of Kenya License.
  • Up-to-date certifications in BLS (Basic Life Support), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), and EMONC (Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care).
  • Minimum of 5 years’ nursing experience, including at least 2 years in a maternity unit and 1 year in a supervisory position.

D. Key Job Requirements

  • Proven customer service orientation and ability to handle client feedback with professionalism.
  • Familiarity with international patient safety goals.
  • Demonstrated clinical expertise in obstetrics and maternal emergencies.
  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in documentation standards and infection prevention protocols.
  • Crisis management skills and the ability to provide real-time mentorship in high-pressure scenarios.
