Would you like to gain a unique insight into the foreign service, and learn more about the UN, Kenya and Somalia? The Norwegian Embassy in Nairobi is offering two internship positions in the fall of 2025, starting on Monday 26 January 2026. Application deadline 22 September 2025.
The purpose of the internship program is to spread knowledge about and interest in the work of the Foreign Service. As an intern, you will gain good insight into the embassy’s many tasks and duties and several aspects of Norway’s cooperation with Kenya, the UN (UNEP and UN Habitat) and Somalia. The tasks will include political and economic reporting, information and communication work, aid management, multilateral work, business promotion, facilitation of visits/events, as well as administrative and consular tasks.
Nairobi is one of the UN capitals and several UN and multilateral organizations are based in Nairobi. Norway has extensive cooperation with Kenya, Somalia and the UN. The interns will be given special responsibility for strengthening our internal and external communication around this cooperation.
Qualifications
It is a prerequisite that the applicant meets the requirements for student interns described on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website, and accepts the conditions mentioned there.
In the assessment of candidates, emphasis will be placed on:
- commenced higher education in social sciences, economics or law
- relevant academic background and interest in foreign policy
- Knowledge of Kenyan and/or Somali politics, culture and society is an advantage
- Experience from or interest in aid/development cooperation is an advantage
- personal initiative
- analytical properties
- good skills for both collaboration and independent work
- experience with social media and online publishing
- very good written presentation skills in Norwegian
- very good English skills (written and spoken)
Scholarships and practical matters
The internship lasts for six months, starting on Monday, January 26, 2026.
The internship program is unpaid, but the intern receives a stipend that currently amounts to NOK 15,500 per month. The stipend can be combined with support from the Loan Fund. The intern must cover their own travel and living expenses, and is responsible for finding accommodation.
Applicants must be prepared that changes in the travel advice for Kenya may result in the offer of an internship having to be withdrawn. Any expenses incurred prior to joining will not be covered in such situations.

When assessing applications, we place emphasis on relevant academic background, experience, independence, collaboration skills, written communication skills and, last but not least, motivation. Candidates who are considered suitable will be invited to a written test. The best qualified candidates will be invited to a subsequent interview.
