Job Purpose

The position of Mortuary Technician/Mortician III provides essential services in the management and handling of deceased persons within public health facilities in Kakamega County. The role ensures the maintenance of dignity, professional handling of bodies, compliance with health standards, and provision of necessary support to families and medical personnel during sensitive and critical moments.


Duties and Responsibilities

The Mortuary Technician/Mortician III will be responsible for carrying out the following duties and responsibilities in line with established county health guidelines and professional standards:

  1. Collection and transfer of bodies from hospital wards and other designated areas to the mortuary.
  2. Assisting in the preparation and performance of autopsy procedures under the supervision of medical officers or pathologists.
  3. Carrying out body embalming procedures, admission of bodies to the mortuary, and dispatch of bodies to families or designated representatives.
  4. Cleaning, sanitizing, and maintaining mortuary facilities to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
  5. Cleaning and maintaining mortuary equipment, conducting body reconstruction procedures where required, and ensuring readiness of equipment for continuous operations.
  6. Wrapping deceased bodies in mortuary sheets, labelling them appropriately, and storing them in cold storage rooms to preserve their condition.
  7. Maintaining and updating mortuary registers and other official records relating to receipt, custody, and release of deceased bodies in the facility.

Requirements for Appointment

To be considered for appointment to the position of Mortuary Technician/Mortician III, a candidate must meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. A minimum of KCSE Grade C- (Minus) or equivalent.
  2. A Certificate in Mortuary Science or its equivalent from a recognized institution.
  3. A valid license issued by the Kenya Health Professionals Oversight Authority.
  4. A Certificate in Computer Applications from a recognized institution.

This position provides a critical service within the County Health Services Department by supporting both medical operations and the community in managing deceased persons with professionalism and dignity.
