Geothermal Development Company Limited (GDC) has opened applications for the position of Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer. The organization is seeking a strategic and results-oriented leader who will provide overall direction and oversight in the management of the company.

GDC plays a central role in Kenya’s geothermal resource development, including exploration, drilling, steam field development, and the promotion of geothermal direct use projects. The Managing Director & CEO will be responsible for steering the company’s vision while ensuring effective execution of its strategic priorities.

This role is suited for highly experienced professionals with strong leadership, governance, and management capabilities, particularly those with extensive experience in senior management and institutional leadership.

Job Purpose

The Managing Director & CEO will be responsible for the overall strategic leadership and management of the company. The office holder will provide executive direction in line with the company’s mandate and ensure that GDC continues to achieve its objectives in geothermal resource exploration, infrastructure development, steam field management, innovation, and commercialization.

The role also serves as the critical link between the Board of Directors and management while ensuring that the company operates efficiently, ethically, and in alignment with national energy priorities.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will undertake the following responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic direction in carrying out the business of the company.
  • Offer leadership that strengthens the company’s corporate image and supports ethical practices and good governance.
  • Lead implementation of Board resolutions in a timely and results-driven manner.
  • Ensure Board papers are accurately prepared, relevant, and submitted to Board members in good time.
  • Serve as the key link between the Board and Management.
  • Spearhead exploration of geothermal resources across designated areas.
  • Oversee infrastructural development related to geothermal operations.
  • Lead drilling of geothermal wells and related operational programs.
  • Drive development of steam fields and ensure prudent management of geothermal resources.
  • Promote innovation in geothermal development and utilization.
  • Support commercialization of geothermal direct use projects and related products.
  • Oversee effective management of human resources to achieve optimal productivity.
  • Develop and implement policies and strategies that attract and retain qualified personnel.
  • Advise the Cabinet Secretary and Principal Secretary on matters relating to Kenya’s energy mix and sector policy development.
  • Provide regular and prompt communication to the Board on technical, financial, and administrative matters affecting the company.
  • Develop annual business plans and submit recommendations to the Board for approval.

Person Specifications

For appointment to this position, candidates must have:

  • At least fifteen (15) years of work experience.
  • Ten (10) years of that experience must have been in a relevant management role.
  • Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university.
  • Master’s Degree from a recognized university.
  • Leadership course lasting not less than four (4) weeks cumulatively from a recognized institution.
  • Professional qualification and membership to a professional body where applicable.
  • Proficiency in computer applications.
  • Fulfilled the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya 2010.

Additional Requirements

Successful candidates will be expected to present clearance documents in line with Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.

These include:

  • Valid Certificate of Good Conduct from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)
  • Clearance Certificate from Higher Education Loans Board (HELB)
  • Tax Compliance Certificate from Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)
  • Clearance from Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC)
  • Clearance Certificate from an approved Credit Reference Bureau (CRB)

Remuneration

Remuneration and benefits for the successful candidate shall be offered in accordance with the terms and conditions outlined in the GDC HR Policy and Procedures Manual.
