Overview of the Role

The Senior Registrar – Paediatrics will be tasked with managing and executing both inpatient and outpatient clinical responsibilities. The role is designed to provide critical curative services in line with established hospital protocols and to uphold the hospital’s patient care objectives. This is a highly collaborative and educational role, providing an opportunity for the successful candidate to not only apply advanced paediatric skills but also grow under the mentorship of experienced specialists and consultants.


Key Roles and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to carry out the following core responsibilities in line with The Nairobi Hospital’s policies and strategic goals:

1. Patient Assessment and Management

  • Perform initial assessments of paediatric patients, providing diagnostic evaluations, stabilization, treatment, and referrals in accordance with the clinical condition and hospital protocol.
  • Manage both emergency and non-emergency procedures in collaboration with assigned specialists or consultants to ensure optimal outcomes.
  • Participate actively in ward rounds to track patient progress and make informed clinical decisions in consultation with other medical team members.

2. Clinical Procedures

  • Perform a wide range of paediatric procedures, both emergent and non-emergent, including but not limited to IV cannulation, emergency intubation, and dialysis catheterization.
  • Support continuous improvement in procedural outcomes through adherence to best clinical practices.

3. Mentorship and Training

  • Provide mentorship and supervision to medical officers and junior staff in paediatrics, enhancing their skills and improving patient care standards.
  • Serve as a resource and guide in day-to-day clinical challenges, sharing knowledge and encouraging evidence-based medical practice.

4. Professional Development and Learning

  • Participate in ongoing medical training and continuous professional development activities related to paediatrics and child health.
  • Pursue opportunities for mentorship and professional growth under recognized specialists or consultants in the field.

5. Outpatient Clinic Participation

  • Attend outpatient clinics to offer follow-up care and medical reviews to paediatric patients.
  • Engage with families and caregivers to provide medical advice, guidance, and support regarding child health and wellness.

6. Research and Protocol Development

  • Contribute to medical research and data analysis within the paediatrics department to enhance clinical outcomes and support the hospital’s academic mission.
  • Participate in the development and review of paediatric protocols, clinical guidelines, and treatment pathways to promote consistency and excellence in care.

7. Ethics, Confidentiality, and Conduct

  • Maintain the highest standards of patient confidentiality and uphold the hospital’s code of conduct at all times.
  • Demonstrate integrity, accountability, and commitment to ethical medical practice.

8. Other Duties

  • Perform additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Medical Services & Research or hospital administration.

Required Education and Experience

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must have the following qualifications:

  • A Master of Medicine in Paediatrics and Child Health from a recognized university.
  • A Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from a recognized institution.
  • Full registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) and possession of a valid practicing license.
  • Specialist recognition by the KMPDC in Paediatrics.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Certification in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
  • Certification in Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or equivalent.
