The National Legal Aid Service (NLAS) has announced a major recruitment drive inviting qualified and interested Kenyan citizens to apply for seventy-eight (78) vacancies across various professional, administrative, legal, finance, human resource, records management, supply chain, and executive leadership positions.
Established under the Legal Aid Act, Cap. 16A of the Laws of Kenya, the National Legal Aid Service is a State Agency mandated to administer a national legal aid scheme that is affordable, accessible, sustainable, credible, appropriate, accountable, transparent, and efficient. The agency operates under a Board of Directors comprising representatives from both State and non-state actors, while the Secretariat is headed by the Chief Executive Officer.
The Service plays a critical role in expanding access to justice for vulnerable and marginalized persons throughout Kenya. Its key functions include providing legal aid services, promoting legal literacy and awareness, supporting community legal services, funding justice advisory centres, and encouraging the use of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.
The Board now invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following vacancies.
Brief Position Descriptions
1. Driver II
The Driver II will provide safe and efficient transport services for staff, official assignments, and authorized visitors. The position also supports routine vehicle maintenance and compliance with transport regulations.
2. Driver I
The Driver I will undertake official transportation duties while ensuring assigned vehicles remain roadworthy and properly maintained. The role contributes to efficient field and office operations.
3. Legal Clerk III
The Legal Clerk III will provide clerical support to legal offices through document handling, records management, and administrative assistance. The position supports efficient legal service delivery.
4. Legal Clerk II
The Legal Clerk II will assist with legal documentation, file management, and administrative support within legal departments. The role contributes to effective case management and office operations.
5. Record Management Assistant II
The Record Management Assistant II will assist in organizing, maintaining, and safeguarding institutional records. The position supports efficient document retrieval and records administration.
6. Legal Aid Officer
The Legal Aid Officer will support the delivery of legal aid services to eligible clients while promoting access to justice through legal assistance and public awareness initiatives.
7. Legal Clerk I
The Legal Clerk I will provide advanced clerical support within legal units by maintaining legal records, preparing documentation, and supporting administrative processes.
8. Supply Chain Management Assistant / Senior
The officer will assist in procurement, inventory control, and supply chain coordination to ensure the timely acquisition and distribution of goods and services required by the organization.
9. Human Resource Management Officer I
The Human Resource Management Officer I will support recruitment, staff welfare, performance management, and implementation of human resource policies within the organization.
10. Senior Legal Aid Officer
The Senior Legal Aid Officer will coordinate legal aid programmes, supervise legal service delivery, and contribute to expanding access to justice across the country.
11. Senior Record Management Assistant
The Senior Record Management Assistant will oversee records management processes while ensuring proper storage, security, and accessibility of organizational information.
12. Senior Accountant
The Senior Accountant will support financial reporting, budgeting, expenditure control, and compliance with public sector financial management requirements.
13. Principal Finance Officer
The Principal Finance Officer will coordinate financial planning, budget implementation, and financial management activities while supporting sound resource utilization.
14. Principal HRM Assistant
The Principal HRM Assistant will support strategic human resource functions, staff administration, and implementation of personnel management initiatives.
15. Principal Accountant
The Principal Accountant will oversee accounting functions, financial reporting, and compliance with applicable financial regulations and standards.
16. Principal Planning Officer
The Principal Planning Officer will coordinate institutional planning, monitoring, and evaluation activities that support organizational performance and strategic objectives.
17. Principal Corporate Communication Officer
The Principal Corporate Communication Officer will coordinate communication strategies, stakeholder engagement, media relations, and public information initiatives.
18. Assistant Director Legal Aid
The Assistant Director Legal Aid will support the planning, coordination, and supervision of legal aid programmes and ensure quality service delivery across the institution.
19. Assistant Director Administration
The Assistant Director Administration will oversee administrative operations, office management, and institutional support services to enhance organizational efficiency.
20. Assistant Director Planning
The Assistant Director Planning will coordinate planning, performance monitoring, and implementation of strategic initiatives aligned with organizational objectives.
21. Deputy Director Administration
The Deputy Director Administration will provide leadership in administrative services while ensuring effective management of institutional operations and resources.
22. Deputy Director ICT
The Deputy Director ICT will oversee information technology systems, digital transformation initiatives, and ICT infrastructure that support organizational operations.
23. Deputy Director Finance & Accounts
The Deputy Director Finance & Accounts will provide leadership in financial management, budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting functions.
24. Deputy Director Planning
The Deputy Director Planning will lead institutional planning, policy implementation, and monitoring activities that support the achievement of organizational goals.

The Deputy Director Corporate Communications will oversee public communication, stakeholder engagement, media relations, and institutional branding initiatives.
26. Deputy Director Supply Chain Management
The Deputy Director Supply Chain Management will oversee procurement, logistics, inventory management, and supply chain operations to support efficient service delivery.
27. Deputy Director Internal Audit & Risk Assurance
The Deputy Director Internal Audit & Risk Assurance will provide leadership in internal audit, governance, risk management, and internal control systems across the organization.
28. Senior Deputy Director, Legal Aid
The Senior Deputy Director, Legal Aid will provide strategic leadership in the implementation, coordination, and oversight of national legal aid programmes.
29. Senior Deputy Director, Human Resource & Administration
The Senior Deputy Director will oversee human resource management and administrative functions while supporting institutional effectiveness and workforce development.
30. Director/Chief Executive Officer
The Director/Chief Executive Officer will provide overall strategic leadership, policy direction, and executive oversight of the National Legal Aid Service while ensuring effective implementation of its statutory mandate.
Employment Terms
The advertised positions are offered under different employment terms. Positions in NLAS Grades 1, 2, and 3 are on a three-year contract, renewable once based on performance. Positions in the remaining grades are permanent and pensionable.
